1) Fusion Energy – Promises, Progress and Prospects
Tuesday 4th October, P/L/002, 19:00 – 20:00
Fusion power offers the prospect of a secure energy supply which is inherently safe, free from greenhouse emissions and potentially capable of supplying baseload electricity production needs for future generations. The technical, engineering and scientific challenges in harnessing fusion energy through magnetically confined plasmas are immense, and this presentation will outline progress towards making fusion power a reality, providing a historical perspective on progress in fusion plasma performance. The talk will provide a forward look at future plans, focussing on the ITER device, the largest fusion energy device ever, currently under construction in the south of France. As well as highlighting the scientific and engineering challenges that must be overcome, the talk will also discuss the economics of developing fusion in the context of other alternative energy sources for the future.
2) The Manhattan Project
Tuesday 4th October, V-Bar, 20:00
After the whirlwind of freshers week, the fun isn’t even half over yet! This Tuesday we’re heading back to the Cold War, pitting USSR against the USA on a bar crawl with a difference!! Just pick a side and gain points as the night progresses for different drinks in each bar!
We’ll be starting in V-bar before heading to The Courtyard, then into town to Spoons, Stroses, Parish, Lowther and finally Kuda!
3) Outreach Training
There’s an introductory meeting happening on Wednesday in P/X/001 14:00 – 15:00 this will let you know about everything that’s going on and how to get properly involved.

4) York GeekFest
York GeekFest is an event coming up at the end of Week 3 (15th and 16th of October) it’s and event filled with lots of stuff to do. Physsoc is going to be there on the Saturday with a stall and also our talk “Bad Science”.
5) Joke of the Week
How many general-relativity theorists does it take to change a light bulb?
Two. One to hold the bulb and one to rotate space.
